Booking a self-catering cottage is relatively easy. Phone the number associated with the cottage or email if that’s more convenient. You will need to pay the full balance for a last minute booking and that may be by card, PayPal or other means depening on the means that each cottage owner employs. Payment may be either over the phone or by online banking; the cottage owner will let you know. There will be a stated arrival time and check out time in the same way as for a hotel.

The cottage will be ready with a personal welcome, someone will show you to it and give you the keys for the duration of your break. You will need to supply all your own food unless there are options for that because the cottage is in the grounds of a hotel or B&B.

The enormous advantages in self-catering is that any champagne or wine that you bring is at cost price and the same applies to your food. You can go out to nearby restaurants for dinner or rustle up something together, which could be fun.
