If you and your other half are fans of the great outdoors, then you have come to the right place as Rutland is home to countless Nature Reserves. The Rutland Water is a vast, man-made reservoir which is ideal for bird watching, especially for the rare Osprey, a bird of prey. The Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre is also housed within the water, surrounded by tranquil woodland and home to birds including falcons, vultures and owls. Other Nature Reserves in Rutland include Merry’s Meadow and Prior’s Coppice which are both lovely for taking romantic strolls hand in hand with each other.
If you and your loved one like to visit grand and opulent stately homes when on holiday, then Rutland is home to a whole host of them which make wonderful day trips. Although technically in Northamptonshire, the incredible Rockingham Castle is very close to the county and is fascinating to visit. Built by William the Conqueror, this Norman Castle was visited by Charles Dickens quite regularly and is home to works of art, historical furniture and photographs of British history.
Just 20 minutes from the Rutland town of Oakham is Burghley House in Stamford. The largest house of the Elizabethan Age features impressive and lavish rooms, a restaurant, stunning grounds and a Sculpture Garden, and is a romantic and dreamy place to stroll through with your loved one.
There are plenty of walking and cycling trails that can be taken from either Oakham or Uppingham, such as the Royal Forest Trail, the Forgotten Rutland Trail and the Rutland Water Trail. Here, you can soak up the history and natural beauty of the area whilst seeing it with your own eyes, before retreating to your idyllic hideaway cottage with your partner for a cosy evening in.
