Sherwood Forest is a must-see, home to an abundance of wildlife, ancient oak trees and many walking and cycling trails, and of course, this was where the legend of Robin Hood was borne, and you can follow in his footsteps through special Robin Hood walking trails that finish at the Creswell Crags, an incredible area of limestone gorge, with a large lake and caves that house Ice Age wall art.

Drifting along to the heart of what is known as DH Lawrence country, where this incredible novelist lived and was inspired to write some of his best works, it is a lovely way of spending time with your other half in a tranquil and picturesque setting. Along with the Attenborough Nature Reserve in Beeston, Gunthorpe Lock along the River Trent and the Chesterfield Canal, there are many other romantic bodies of water to visit when in Nottinghamshire.
If you and your partner prefer to soak up history and heritage then on holiday, then there are plenty of castle and stately homes to explore together. One of these is Nottingham Castle which sits on a hilltop and features panoramic views of this vibrant city. Built by William the Conquerors’ son in around 1068 but completely destroyed after the Civil War, the castle today dates from the late 17th century and features cave tours, and art gallery and stunning gardens. Another historical place to visit is Mr Straw’s House in Worksop, a fascinating National Trust property that offers visitors an insight into life of a tradesman in the 1920s.
