Kenilworth Castle and Elizabeth Garden in Kenilworth is a great place to start when on an idyllic and romantic holiday in Warwickshire. You and your partner can get guided tours through the incredible ruins of this medieval fortress, which used to once be the home of Robert Dudley who is known for being the love of Queen Elizabeth I’s life. Ambling through Elizabeth Garden is a great way to end your day trip here as you take in the peaceful surroundings of the lavish grounds created to win the heart of the Queen.
Another castle that simply has to be seen when on holiday in Warwickshire is Warwick Castle. Imposing and impressive, this medieval castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 and is located in a tranquil setting on the River Avon. Much of the castle today dates from the 14th century and taking tours through this incredible and mighty structure is something you have to do when in this county.
Warwickshire is a haven for Shakespeare fans, and is home to his birthplace as well as Anne Hathaway’s cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon. This delightful thatched cottage was once home to the Bard’s bride and is set in dreamy and romantic surroundings, with flower beds, gardens and woodlands. Inside, there are many original features and pieces of furniture including Anne Hathaway’s bed, and exploring the cottage as well as the picturesque market town itself, makes a wonderful day trip.
If you prefer nature then you can visit lots of beautiful gardens and parklands including the Brandon Marsh Nature Centre in Coventry, owned by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Opened by Sir David Attenborough, visitors can explore this stunning nature reserve and stop off for tea and a cake at the little tea shop in the centre. There is also the lovely Hartshill Hayes Country Park which is close to Nuneaton and is a vast area of woodland and rolling hills, with splendid views over the beautiful Anker Valley – perfect for picnics and walks with your loved one.
