Imposing and impressive, this medieval castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 and is located in a tranquil setting on the River Avon. Warwickshire is a haven for Shakespeare fans, and is home to his birthplace as well as Anne Hathaway’s cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon. If you prefer nature then you can visit lots of beautiful gardens and parklands including the Brandon Marsh Nature Centre in Coventry, owned by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Opened by Sir David Attenborough, visitors can explore this stunning nature reserve and stop off for tea and a cake at the little tea shop in the centre. There is also the lovely Hartshill Hayes Country Park which is close to Nuneaton and is a vast area of woodland and rolling hills, with splendid views over the beautiful Anker Valley – perfect for picnics and walks with your loved one.
